Measuring Performance: Metrics for Manipulator Design, Control, and Optimization

How good is a robot? Three challenges arise from this question: first, defining performance the robot’s observable behavior; second, quantifying with an index that obtainable through direct measurement or computation, and representative of measured quantity; third, ensuring procedure repeatable general, to enable comparison, benchmarking, increase safety efficiency standards. However, landscape metrics for industrial manipulators fragmented, limited effort being made toward unified framework. This survey aimed at collecting, classifying, analyzing key works on topic, focus mechanical robots. Two diverging trends are outlined, commercial standards adopting set academic research encouraging development new indices. The shortcomings both approaches highlighted, providing perspective how future could proceed.
